Aubrey Plaza is one of the highlights of Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, but she has a starring role in another new movie that’s an even better showcase of her acting talents. Although Megalopolis has received extremely mixed reviews from critics, Plaza’s performance is one of the few bright spots that has been praised across the board. Plaza stars alongside Adam Driver and Giancarlo Esposito in the supporting role of Wow Platinum, and her performance is just as memorable and unconventional as her character’s name.
Wow is an insatiable TV personality who delivers the financial news and, ironically, has an unquenchable thirst for money and power. She’s a quintessential femme fatale with a Lady Macbeth-esque arc in which she seduces whoever she thinks will bring her the most wealth and influence, then casts them aside as soon as they’ve served their purpose. Plaza is the unpredictable wildcard of the Megalopolis cast, and Wow is one of the film’s greatest characters. But Plaza has an even better movie playing in theaters right now.
Aubrey Plaza's My Old Ass Is Playing In Theaters Too – Why You Should See It
My Old Ass Is A Great Comedy With A Unique Premise
Megalopolis isn’t the only Aubrey Plaza movie playing in theaters right now; she also stars in the comedy My Old Ass.My Old Ass stars Maisy Stella Elliott, a teenager who takes magic mushrooms and gets to see her 39-year-old self, played by Plaza. As Elliott’s two selves get to know each other, the older one chastises the younger one for all the mistakes she’s about to make.
Plaza can also be seen playing the villainous Rio Vidal in Marvel Television’s Agatha All Along on Disney+, releasing new episodes every Wednesday.
My Old Ass is director Megan Park’s follow-up to her 2021 debut feature The Fallout, which revolves around the aftermath of a school shooting. Park’s second movie is much more upbeat and laid-back — My Old Ass has a premise that’s rarely been done before, and it’s executed as one of the best comedies of the year. Unlike Megalopolis, which has received a mixed response from both critics and audiences, earning “rotten” scores from both camps, My Old Ass has been universally praised. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a critics’ score of 92% and an audience score of 90%.
My Old Ass Uses Aubrey Plaza Much Better Than Megalopolis
My Old Ass Gives Plaza A More Three-Dimensional Character Than Megalopolis
While it’s fun to see April Ludgate play a character who’s closer to Joan Callamezzo in Megalopolis, My Old Ass arguably makes much better use of Plaza’s acting abilities. Unlike Megalopolis, My Old Ass gives her a more three-dimensional, well-rounded character to play.

Plaza's character is a middle-aged woman filled with regret in My Old Ass, imploring her younger self to make better choices. While the premise is funny by default, My Old Ass also includes touching moments. Creating an on-screen dynamic with the younger version of her own character presented Aubrey Plaza with a unique acting challenge that most of her Megalopolis scenes did not.
